ABOUT CHILDAID

Established over 50 years ago out of Keston Institute and originally named Aid to Russian Christians, our mission is to help disadvantaged children in Eastern Europe through the creation of long-term partnerships with local organisations.

Through local project partners we serve in love and with Christ’s strength to help children turn their lives around, so that they can lead normal and productive lives as adults, even with their ongoing disabilities and additional needs. Our projects for families in crises, children living with disabilities, orphans and victims of the war in Ukraine include:

Preventing abandonment or supporting those who have been abandoned.

Transforming lives and transforming attitudes to disability through direct action.

Finding resilience in adversity through creating firm foundations for children, young people and families living in precarious conditions.

Giving children a voice and a childhood through education and play.

Opening hearts and minds to the Gospel.

Our projects are located in Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus:

Our work includes:

Free-to-access rehabilitation therapies (physio, hydro, occupational, speech)

Emotional and family support

Education support, mentoring and life‑skills development

Emergency aid, debt intervention and longer‑term stabilisation for families

Psychosocial care, especially for those internally displaced in Ukraine and Moldova

Bible and Christian teaching to children and young people

Prayer time with children, young people and parents

Community celebrations and camps restoring joy, normality and belonging.

We serve around 3,500 children and young people, plus their families and the extended community. Each individual has their own story, their own concerns, their own dreams.

One such is Ira:

Ira was alone. A 15-year-old girl who was very closed, didn’t trust people, didn’t know what she wanted, was afraid of the world, and was full of pain, sadness, disappointment, distrust and seemed lost. Then our partner in western Ukraine came to help children who were leaving the State boarding school. Her attitude was very sceptical. She thought, “They will come, stay and go. No one needs me”. She had no intention of opening her heart and letting someone in. But something happened that she wasn’t expecting. They didn’t leave; instead, they started getting closer. Their attitude, their actions, their words started to show her something that made her open my heart. They offered her a relationship and became people she missed. They were mum and dad!

They always kept their word. The way they were just near and knew what words to say. How mum and dad thawed her closed, disloyal, broken heart.

She learned to trust, see her worth, let people in her heart. Dad showed that men can be trusted. Ira started to cry again as her heart thawed. They open her eyes and heart to God. Twenty years later she still struggles with things, but her family are still there.
